Is E really 0 miles on those? My Acura at 0 miles remaining has about three gallons of fuel left. Seems like a lot for a reserve but I am thinking that the pump needs some, or prefers to have some fuel sloshing around to keep it cool. You need to drive like Kramer from Seinfeld to see how far you can really make it.

One time the tank in the van hit zero. Dad said we had at least 14 kilometres left. He wonders why I have anxiety.

It’s never ideal to run on the end of the tank as dirt will normally stay at the bottom , a little bit like the deposit on the bottom of an old wine bottle, if you drink 95% of it you wont have much on your glass but the last drops will be filled with it.

Not to mention that in corners or if you go up/downhill you will have starvation even if there is still a little gas on the tank.

Anoth er issue is that gasoline engine heat up when running lean which can be bad news and fuel pump are usually cooled by the fuel around it so it’s also a bad news for it.

My Suburban ran out once with the “Miles Left” still saying 52. I’ve never trusted it since then— even with a 36 gallon tank.

Trust issues.  they suck

My Corolla is the same way. Owners manual says it's a 13 gallon tank, gas gauge says it's a 10 gallon tank. I haven't had the confidence to push it and figure out which one's lying.

The only way to know for sure is to carry a 5 gallon Jerry can with you and run till you start to spudder

I think the closest I’ve come to running out was once when I put 44.7 litres into my 45 litre tank....I’ve never let it get that low since, but I was in a hurry to an appointment I couldn’t miss that was next door to a gas station, so I drove straight on so I wouldn’t miss my appointment by having to stop for gas and then got gas next door afterward before I went home...that was a close one, haha!

The fuel light on my Dodge isn’t fucking around, supposedly 60km left when it comes on. I once ran out between the two gas stations in Davidson, wanted to go to the “good” one. Why is it th e good one? because they will drive you back to your car with a J erry can after you hike there in february.

Fords are pretty generious. I have run all my cars (‘12 Focus, ‘05 Mustang and my previous ‘07 Grand Marquis) on fumes and always had more than a gallon of gas left.

The Passat GT? Drove it to about 10 miles till empty one time. Didn’t pay attention to how much went in the tank. Perhaps next time. I also always resent the trip. That way when my gas gauge does something funny I can about estimate where I am and when I need to fill back up.

Gauge was all the way on E.  I’m sure it won’t shut down the moment the screen says 0 but I don’t think there is too much left in there at that point.  Maybe some day I’ll try it but not when I have two kids in the truck with me.

Back in 2006  I actually ran my ES300 completely empty at the top of a hill and coasted the last half mile into a gas station at the bottom in neutral. No power steering or brakes since it wasn’t running. Not a ton of fun. I tried to play it cool like look how good I am at knowing just how much fuel I have left but really it’s an experience I don’t want to have again.

Yeah I’m starting to round up my adventure kit and a can is going to be in there.  I actually had to cut the trip I was on short today because I forgot that my MPG drops below 10 in 4x4 and off-road mode bombing down gravel roads.

Hah. I pushed our old company Jetta to 458 miles on a tank and I think the gas light was on for the last hour of the drive. Also my bladder was about a quarter tank past full...

I was trying to get to my Denver dog kennel from Albuquerque before they closed. Made it with three minutes to spare.

I got to 2 once. I’d rather not though (among other things, I feel like shit is more likely to break when you are that low).

Also, fix your damn cauldron light!

I don’t think I’ll make it that far in mine... Passat GT. Which means the VR6 might have something to do with that in combination with my heavy right foot. I suppose on the highway it might happen! LOL

Well when the company is monitoring your driving record you tend to be a little more careful

I have the tires at 34/32 psi right now because most of my driving is on dirt and gravel with next to nothing in the bed . The light seems to come on around 36 psi. I just look at my tires before I go and ignore the light. I wish there was some way to tell it you are off-road and pick a value for it to turn  on, but I think there are regulations against that.

I’m surprised nobody beat me too it, but this episode basically sums up the rush. The lowest I’ve ever gone was 30, but I’d used the entire tank for 8 hours straight and needed to get off my ass. Also, didn’t want to run out on the highway, but that’s a personal preference.
